Home Tips for Eco-Friendly Maintenance of Cloths and Laundry Machine
Living an eco-friendly life is not only good for your health but also for the earth. By going eco-friendly you will be saving a lot of money on your wardrobe. That means switching to cotton, jute and hemp just to name a few of the natural fibers under the cellulosic category. Then there is animal hair like wool that you can use if you live in a cold place. The advantages of using synthetic fabrics are many; they are less expensive to buy, have longer live and can be colored with exotic colors, but then they are detrimental to the environment and on the negative side they can cause allergies in some individuals. However, a total switch over to natural fibers from synthetic and man-made fibers is a far cry. But you can certainly moderate their use. More than the harm that fabrics can do to the environment, the soap and detergents we use to wash them are equally harmful and they are more frequently the cause for groundwater Pollution as I discovered the other day when I was reading an article that I accessed with my Cox Internet connection.
Extending the life of your cloths can be an excellent way to help us have a better environment or at least delay or stop it from going worse. To extend the life you will need to make some changes to your lifestyles. Like for example, you can try laundering your clothes less often. Laundering less often also means saving money on detergents and electric energy that you use to run the laundry machine. Fewer yards of cloth made mean smaller energy consumption by cloth mills and so on. If at all you have to wash your clothes more frequently consider using cold water over warm water. In fact it is not only more eco-friendly, but can also save electric energy.
One of the most common ways to get brighter clothes is to use dangerous chemicals like the bleach for example. They release enormous amounts of chlorine into the atmosphere and besides they can fade your dress much faster otherwise. Besides bleaches will disintegrate the fabric much faster than you may have imagined. That means a shorter life for your clothes, more clothes to refurbish your wardrobe, more clothes to manufacture, and all of that require electric energy. Producing electric energy itself means more mining for coal and other fossil fuel reserves.
Why not try hanging your cloths in the yard behind your home instead of using the drier? Is that not an efficient way of using an exhaustible energy source like the Sun’s rays to make our earth a greener place to live? Hanging your cloths outdoors also mean better protection against molds and bacteria, and consequently better health for the family. Dry out in the open under shade can extend the life of your fabrics. Avoiding the drier in your laundry machine totally may not be practical for everyone but if you can use them sparingly, and that is practical.
The way you feed your cloths into the laundry machine too matters a lot if you want to save other cloths from damage and premature retirement. One of the ways you can prevent damage to other cloths is to pull the zipper up in the pants and remove those hooks and metal clad accessories before you put them in the machine. They will not only save the whole lot of fabrics that go along with them but will also save the interior of the laundry machine as well. If you are in the habit of saying good bye to your cloths just because you see a small tear or lose stitch, put an end to it. Why not consider remodeling it and extending its use by a few months? It is not just saving money for you; it means saving your earth from destruction prematurely. Why not we leave behind a better legacy for our children than what our ancestors have done for us?
